Being native to the south-eastern states of America the River Birch is well acclimatised to extremes in weather conditions. As its name suggests it is often found growing along river banks where it enjoys the moisture rich soils, however it has also been successfully used in urban planting schemes were dry soils and wind are the order of the day. Catkins adorn in early spring before the diamond shape glossy leaves emerge.
