Tsuga canadensis, commonly known as Eastern Hemlock, is a graceful and long-lived evergreen tree native to eastern North America. This conifer is known for its distinctive, feathery foliage and its ability to thrive in a variety of conditions. Mature Eastern Hemlocks typically reach heights of 20 to 30 meters. The spread of a mature tree can extend from 6 to 12 meters, creating a broad, pyramidal shape with a slightly drooping crown.

One key feature of Tsuga canadensis is its fine, flat needles, which are dark green on top and have two parallel white lines on the underside. These needles are arranged in a flattened, horizontal spray along the branches, giving the tree its characteristic delicate, lacy appearance. The bark of the Eastern Hemlock is another notable feature, starting off smooth and gray-brown in younger trees and becoming deeply furrowed and reddish-brown with age.

Eastern Hemlock prefers cool, moist, well-drained soils and can grow in a range of soil types, including loam, sandy loam, and clay. It is highly shade-tolerant and often found in shaded forest understories, yet it can also adapt to partial sunlight. This tree plays a crucial ecological role, providing habitat and food for various wildlife species. However, it's important to note that Tsuga canadensis is currently threatened by the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, an aphid-like insect that can cause significant damage and mortality to hemlock populations. Despite this challenge, Eastern Hemlock remains a cherished and iconic species in many North American forests.
