Toona sinensis, commonly known as Chinese Mahogany or Chinese Toon, is a deciduous tree admired for its lush foliage and edible young leaves. This tree typically reaches a mature height of 15 to 25 meters, with a spread ranging from 10 to 15 meters, making it a substantial addition to any landscape. The bark of Toona sinensis is a striking feature, often smooth and greyish-brown when young, developing into a rougher, more furrowed texture as the tree ages.

The tree's leaves are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous lanceolate leaflets that turn a vibrant reddish-purple in spring before maturing to a rich green over the summer, providing a dynamic and colourful display throughout the growing season. In late spring to early summer, Toona sinensis produces small, fragrant white flowers arranged in large panicles, which later give way to clusters of winged seeds.

Toona sinensis thrives in well-drained soils and is adaptable to various soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it versatile for different garden settings. Notably, the young shoots and leaves of Toona sinensis are highly prized in culinary applications, particularly in Chinese cuisine, where they are used for their unique onion-like flavor. This tree not only adds aesthetic and ecological value to landscapes but also offers edible benefits, making it a multifunctional and attractive choice for gardeners and landscapers alike.
