TILIA platyphyllos / Broad-leaved Lime

The Tilia platyphyllos, commonly known as the Broad-leaved Lime or Large-leaved Linden, is a majestic deciduous tree that can grow to an impressive mature height of 30 to 40 meters. This remarkable tree features a broad, rounded crown and can spread up to 15 meters, making it an excellent choice for large landscapes, parks, and avenues.

One of the most distinguishing features of the Broad-leaved Lime is its large, heart-shaped leaves, which can measure up to 15 centimetres across. These leaves are bright green and have serrated edges, turning a beautiful yellow in the autumn. During the summer, the tree produces clusters of fragrant, creamy-yellow flowers that are highly attractive to bees, making it a valuable species for supporting local pollinator populations.

Tilia platyphyllos thrives in deep, fertile, well-drained soils but is quite adaptable and can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay and loam. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it versatile for various planting locations. Additionally, the Broad-leaved Lime is known for its resilience to urban pollution, which makes it a suitable choice for city environments. Notably, its wood is soft and easily workable, historically used for carving and making musical instruments. This hardy and beautiful tree offers both ecological benefits and aesthetic appeal, making it a cherished addition to any landscape.
