Quercus velutina, commonly known as Black Oak, is a majestic deciduous tree native to North America. It can be identified by its dark, deeply furrowed bark which appears almost black, a characteristic from which it derives its name. The leaves are glossy green on top and pale, velvety underneath, turning a striking red or yellow in the fall, adding vibrant colour to the landscape. Mature Black Oaks typically reach a height of 20 to 25 meters and can spread approximately 15 to 18 meters, creating a broad and impressive canopy.

Black Oak thrives in a variety of soil types, preferring well-drained, sandy, or loamy soils. It can tolerate dry and acidic conditions, making it a versatile choice for different landscapes. However, it does best in soils that are not too compacted, as this can restrict root growth. This tree has a preference for full sun to partial shade, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain healthy growth and foliage.

Notable features of the Black Oak include its acorns, which are an important food source for wildlife such as squirrels, deer, and various bird species. The tree's deep root system helps prevent soil erosion, making it an ecologically valuable species. Additionally, Black Oak wood is known for its strength and durability, often used in furniture and flooring. This tree is not only a beautiful addition to any landscape but also plays a critical role in supporting local ecosystems.
