QUERCUS texana / Texas Oak or Nuttall Oak

The Quercus texana, commonly known as the Texas Oak or Nuttall Oak, is a stately and resilient tree native to the southeastern United States. This deciduous oak is well-regarded for its fast growth and striking autumn foliage, which transforms into vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold, creating a stunning visual display.

Mature Texas Oaks typically reach heights of 18 to 24 meters with a spread of about 12 to 18 meters. The tree boasts a straight trunk with a rounded or pyramidal crown, making it an attractive shade tree for large landscapes. Its leaves are deeply lobed, with a glossy green appearance in the growing season, and its acorns serve as a valuable food source for wildlife, including birds and small mammals.

Texas Oak thrives in well-drained, acidic to slightly alkaline soils, with a preference for loamy or sandy textures. It is moderately drought-tolerant once established but performs best with consistent moisture. This oak species is remarkably adaptable, tolerating both full sun and partial shade. Its ability to withstand urban pollution and clay soil conditions makes it a versatile choice for city environments and residential areas. Overall, the Texas Oak is a remarkable tree that offers both aesthetic beauty and ecological benefits.
