QUERCUS pyrenaica / Pyrenean Oak

Quercus pyrenaica, commonly known as the Pyrenean Oak, is a deciduous tree that is native to the mountainous regions of southwestern Europe, particularly the Pyrenees, as its name suggests. This robust tree is celebrated for its resilience and adaptability to various environmental conditions. One of its key features is its deeply lobed leaves, which are reminiscent of those found on the English oak but are more intricately divided. The leaves also have a distinctive greyish-green colour on the top and are covered with fine hairs on the underside, which gives them a slightly fuzzy texture.

The Pyrenean Oak can reach a mature height of approximately 10 to 20 meters, with a spread that can extend up to 12 meters. This substantial spread makes it an excellent choice for providing shade in large landscapes. The tree's trunk is often twisted and gnarled, adding to its picturesque appearance. In autumn, the foliage turns a beautiful golden-brown before falling, adding seasonal interest to gardens and parks.

In terms of soil preferences, Quercus pyrenaica is quite versatile. It thrives in well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types from acidic to slightly alkaline. However, it prefers soils that are sandy or loamy. The Pyrenean Oak is also relatively drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for areas with dry summers. This tree prefers full sun to partial shade, which allows it to develop a strong, sturdy structure and vibrant foliage. Its ability to adapt to various soil types and light conditions, along with its attractive appearance and moderate size, makes the Pyrenean Oak a valuable addition to diverse planting schemes.
