Ostrya carpinifolia, commonly known as the Hop Hornbeam, is a deciduous tree that belongs to the Betulaceae family. This elegant tree is native to southern Europe and western Asia, and it is admired for its graceful appearance and hardiness. The Hop Hornbeam typically reaches a mature height of 15 to 20 meters, with a spread of 7 to 10 meters (approximately 23 to 33 feet). It features a rounded to oval crown with slender, slightly arching branches that add to its attractive form.

The foliage of Ostrya carpinifolia is particularly noteworthy. The leaves are alternate, simple, and ovate with serrated edges, resembling those of the common hornbeam but slightly more delicate. They turn a bright yellow in the fall, providing a striking display of autumn colour. Another distinctive feature of this tree is its fruit, which resembles hops used in beer brewing, hence the common name "Hop Hornbeam." These fruit clusters, known as strobiles, are small, papery, and hang in clusters, adding ornamental value to the tree.

Hop Hornbeam is quite versatile in terms of growing conditions. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils but can tolerate a range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils. This tree is also adaptable to different light conditions, thriving in full sun to partial shade. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established, making it a good choice for urban landscapes and parks. Additionally, Ostrya carpinifolia is resistant to many pests and diseases, which contributes to its popularity as a low-maintenance ornamental tree.
