Mespilus germanica, commonly known as the medlar, is a small, deciduous tree that is both ornamental and fruit-bearing. Native to Southwest Asia and Southeastern Europe, this tree has been cultivated for centuries for its unique fruit and attractive appearance. The medlar typically reaches a mature height of 4 to 6 meters, with a spread that is roughly equal, making it a compact and manageable choice for gardens and landscapes.

One of the key features of Mespilus germanica is its gnarled, twisted branches that create an interesting and picturesque silhouette, particularly in the winter months when the tree is leafless. The leaves are dark green and elliptical, turning a lovely golden-yellow in the fall. In late spring, the medlar produces large, white, five-petaled flowers that give way to its distinctive reddish-brown fruit. The fruit, known as a pome, is unique in that it must be bletted, or allowed to over-ripen, before it becomes edible and develops a sweet, tangy flavour.

Mespilus germanica prefers well-drained soil and can thrive in a variety of soil types, including loam, clay, and sandy soils, provided they are not waterlogged. It does best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, though fruit production may be reduced. The medlar is relatively low-maintenance and hardy, making it an excellent choice for both experienced gardeners and novices alike. Additionally, it is valued not just for its fruit but also for its historical significance and the rustic charm it adds to any landscape.
