The Fagus sylvatica 'Atropunicea', commonly known as the Copper Beech, is a striking deciduous tree that is prized for its rich, deep-purple foliage, which can appear almost black in certain lights. This majestic tree features a broad, rounded canopy with smooth, grey bark and elegantly spreading branches. Its leaves are oval to elliptical with a smooth, wavy margin, providing a lush, dense cover during the growing season. In autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful coppery-bronze before falling, adding a unique splash of colour to the landscape.

Mature Copper Beech trees can reach impressive heights of up to 30 meters, with a spread of approximately 18 meters, making them a substantial presence in any garden or park setting. They are relatively slow-growing but can live for several centuries, becoming more magnificent with age. The tree also produces small, inconspicuous flowers in the spring, which develop into triangular nuts encased in spiny husks by autumn. These nuts, known as beechnuts, are edible and provide a food source for wildlife.

Copper Beech trees thrive best in well-drained, fertile soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, including chalk, clay, and loam. They prefer full sun to partial shade, although their foliage colour is most vibrant when exposed to more sunlight. It is important to provide ample space for these trees to grow, as their extensive root systems can be sensitive to compaction and disturbance. With proper care and the right conditions, the Copper Beech can serve as a stunning focal point in any landscape, combining ornamental beauty with ecological value.
