About This Tree
This is a very versatile tree that is fast growing, holds a broadly columnar shape with the crown becoming more domed with age, a deciduous tree. Many will associate this with Christmas and roasting chestnuts on the open fire!
In spring this tree comes to life with pale yellow male & female catkins which are followed by edible nuts after hot summers. Other beautiful features include it spirally, furrowed bark and its oblong, toothed, glossy green leaves.
This is a statley tree that won the Award of Garden Merit in 2002 and the timber is highly prized in the Mediterranean regions. It prefers well drained, preferably light soil and dislikes chalk.
