Carya ovata, commonly referred to as Shagbark Hickory, is a deciduous tree celebrated for its unique peeling bark and the production of valuable nuts. This species is native to North America and is a significant component of the hardwood forests in the eastern United States and Canada. The most distinguishing feature of the Shagbark Hickory is its shaggy bark, which peels away in long strips, giving the tree a rugged and textured appearance. Its leaves are compound, typically consisting of five lance-shaped, serrated leaflets. In the spring, inconspicuous greenish flowers appear, which, although not particularly showy, are essential for nut production. The tree yields sweet, edible nuts encased in a hard shell, much favoured by both wildlife and humans.

In terms of size, the Shagbark Hickory generally reaches a height of 18 to 30 meters, with a mature spread of about 12 to 20 meters. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soils but is adaptable to a range of soil types, including sandy or clay soils, provided they are not waterlogged. This tree prefers full sun to partial shade and requires at least six hours of direct sunlight for optimal growth and nut production. Notably, the Shagbark Hickory is known for its impressive longevity, often living for over 200 years. Its wood is exceptionally strong and flexible, making it highly valued for tool handles and furniture. Additionally, the nuts serve as an important food source for various wildlife, such as squirrels, chipmunks, and birds. Overall, Carya ovata is an excellent choice for large landscapes or naturalized areas, offering both aesthetic appeal and ecological benefits.
