This cut-leafed cultivar of the Common Alder was introduced from France in the 1820s. Known as the Alnus glutinosa ‘Laciniata’ or the Cut-Leaf Alder; this tree looks very similar to the Alder but has a different look in the foliage.

During the spring time the Laciniata can be seen with bright green foliage which will last throughout the spring and summer months but will eventually turn to a magnificent yellow colour during the autumn giving an amazing display of colour when other trees may look brown or bare. These leaves are similar to the Common Alder but are more deeply cut compared to it and other cultivars. The Laciniata will usually only grow to a medium height which will suit larger gardens well but also is able to withstand some air pollution which makes it a good choice as an urban tree.

Cut-Leaf Alder will perform well in most soils including clay soils that are well drained but also is able to withstand water-logged soils making this tree very easy to grow anywhere.
